About Us

Jua means “sun” in Swahili, symbolizing, growth, and the power of the next generation to shape a brighter future.

Jua Centre empowers Black girls ages 10 to 19 with the knowledge, leadership skills, and confidence to become leaders in sustainability. Through workshops, mentorship, and research-informed programs, we help young people understand environmental challenges and develop solutions in their communities.

Girls, especially Black girls, are nearly invisible in the green economy. Yet, Black women and girls experience the brunt of climate injustice (UN Women, 2023, p.11).

By 2030, the global shift to a greener economy will create 24 million new jobs worldwide (ILO, 2018).

Values Grounded in Global Action

SDG 4

Quality Education

We believe true sustainability requires moving beyond traditional classrooms to foster critical inquiry and hands-on problem-solving. We empower girls to become active thinkers who can apply their knowledge to build real-world solutions.

SDG 5

Gender Equality

We confront the reality that climate change disproportionately affects women and girls by championing their empowered voice in every decision-making space. Our programs transform participants into bold advocates who can speak persuasively for their rights and their planet.

SDG 8

Decent Work & Econ Growth

A sustainable future requires a new kind of green and inclusive economy, and we empower girls to become the innovators who drive this transformation. By fostering financial literacy and an entrepreneurial mindset, we prepare them for decent work that contributes to resilient local economic growth.

SDG 13

Climate Action

We treat the climate crisis as an urgent priority, moving from awareness to impactful action by empowering girls to lead in their communities. Through hands-on projects and advocacy training, they become effective stewards who build resilience and demand stronger climate policies.
